A Historic Moment in the Kubanoor: When the Minaret Honored the Stars

Kasargod: In a deeply moving and historic gesture that has resonated across the district, the Kubanoor Jamaliya Juma Masjid became the site of a unique celebration of knowledge and youth. In an era where religious institutions are increasingly becoming centers for holistic community development, the Masjid Committee took the extraordinary step of honoring 10-year-old Zaeem Mohammed (AstroZaeem) for his remarkable achievements in space science and oratory excellence.

The atmosphere was filled with a sense of collective pride following the Juma prayers, as the community gathered to witness a rare sight. Imam Abdussalam Darimi, a highly respected and eminent scholar, led the ceremony. In a powerful endorsement of modern education and scientific inquiry, the Imam personally honored Zaeem inside the Masjid.

This recognition from a scholar of Abdussalam Darimi’s stature carries immense weight. By honoring a child who has mastered the technicalities of NASA’s Artemis II mission and speaks with a native-level English accent, the Masjid Committee has sent a clear message: the pursuit of scientific knowledge is a noble endeavor that deserves the highest community respect.

Zaeem, a 5th-grade graduate of Explorer School, has become a symbol of hope for Kasargod—a region often labeled as educationally backward. The Masjid Committee’s decision to highlight his selection as the “Youngest Creator” for Space India’s SALF 2026 underscores a shift toward celebrating academic and digital brilliance within local social fabric.

The honor was not an isolated event. Zaeem’s journey has triggered a tidal wave of appreciation from various prestigious bodies:

The Safa Nagar Muhyaddeen Masjid also conducted a special program to honor his talents.

AKM Ashraf, MLA, presented an award during a program for Hajj pilgrims, emphasizing Zaeem’s role as a youth icon.

Dubai KMCC, the largest expat association in the UAE, previously conferred the Galactic Star Award upon him, with leaders visiting his home to congratulate his father, Zubair Kubanoor.

The sight of Zaeem—a young boy who simplifies cosmic mysteries for millions on Instagram—being celebrated by the Kubanoor Jamaliya Juma Masjid Committee is a testament to the village’s forward-thinking spirit.

Leaders from the Walking Together Foundation, MSF, and various KMCC committees (Manjeshwar and Mangalpady) have all echoed this sentiment, but the honor bestowed by the Masjid remains the most poignant. It highlights a community that nurtures its children not just in tradition, but in the skills required to lead on the global stage.

As Explorer School management beautifully noted: “Sky is not the limit; it’s just the beginning.” For the people of Kubanoor, that beginning was sanctified and celebrated right in the heart of their community, proving that when a child reaches for the stars, the whole village stands behind him.
