Why Sneakers Became India’s New Style Statement — and How Swagger Hub Capitalised on It

India | Business, Fashion & E-Commerce — Special Feature

Few categories capture India’s changing fashion sensibilities as clearly as sneakers do today. Once seen mainly as sportswear, sneakers have become a central part of how young Indians express personal style, influenced heavily by global streetwear, celebrity fashion, music and social media platforms that give Indian consumers a direct window into international trends. Swagger Hub, founded by Varun Kumar in 2017, was built specifically around this transition, betting early that it would only accelerate.

Kumar launched the company at a moment when India’s sneaker market was still taking shape and largely underserved by existing retailers, aiming to give customers access to premium, globally inspired sneakers and fashion accessories through careful sourcing and curation rather than a generic, one-size-fits-all catalogue. That early positioning meant building expertise in international sourcing well before demand for such products had fully matured domestically.

The brand imported products from multiple countries and kept a close watch on evolving international trends to keep its offerings current, treating this as a continuous process rather than something finalised once and left unchanged. Kumar has noted that staying relevant in a fast-moving category like sneakers requires constant attention to what’s gaining popularity internationally, since tastes among younger consumers can shift relatively quickly.

As e-commerce adoption accelerated nationally over the years following the company’s founding, Swagger Hub extended that same attention to detail into the customer experience, focusing on smoother order processing, reliable delivery, and responsive support alongside its product range. This dual focus, the company suggests, has been central to building a customer base that returns for repeat purchases rather than buying once and moving on.

The company says this strategy has helped it surpass one million orders and build a community of more than 200,000 customers, milestones it frames as evidence of sustained demand rather than a short-lived spike in interest tied to a particular product drop or marketing moment. Reaching that scale, Kumar suggests, reflects years of consistent performance across a broad and varied customer base.

According to Kumar, the brand’s growth tracks closely with the broader cultural rise of sneaker culture in India, where footwear has become tied to confidence and individual identity for many young consumers rather than remaining a purely functional purchase. He points to this cultural shift as the underlying force that has made a business like Swagger Hub possible at the scale it has reached.

Swagger Hub’s stated plans for the future include fresh collections, an expanding accessory lineup, and continued investment in the shopping experience, all pointed toward a long-term ambition: establishing itself as a trusted global sneaker and lifestyle brand, anchored by consistent service and customer trust built order by order over time, rather than growth pursued for its own sake.
